TWELVE Vidalia Comprehensive High School DECA members qualify to compete at ICDC in the DECA Stock Market Game! The DECA Stock Market game allows DECA members to test their investment skills against other high school DECA members in a nationwide, online investment competition. Sponsored by the Foundation for Investor Education, the competition consists of two parts: 1) an online investing competition, and 2) a portfolio presentation at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, California in April of 2009. This year, 4,985 DECA teams competed in the online investing competition that took place from September 2, 2008 to December 12, 2008. DECA members invested a hypothetical $100,000 in stocks and funds that traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the NASDAQ stock market, and the American Stock Exchange. DECA members were allowed to buy, sell, short sell, and short cover positions in stocks and funds. Game rules required DECA members to use a diversified investment strategy as they tried to avoid market pitfalls and take advantage of market opportunities. The top 16 DECA teams from each DECA Region qualified for ICDC where competitors will attend the Investment Institute and present their portfolio to determine national level winners for the DECA Stock Market Game. Playing as individuals, DECA students from Vidalia Comprehensive High School claimed 12 of the top 16 slots in the DECA Southeast Region. In addition to claiming a majority of the slots in the Southeast Region, 5 of the top 10 ranked portfolio values in the nation were from Vidalia Comprehensive High School. Final rankings were based on highest percentage portfolio growth above or below the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index based on game registration dates.
